From 5May, only plastics 1 and 2 will be accepted along in usual kerbside recycling. Plastics 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 go into general waste. This change has come into place due to global recycling markets changing what plastics they take.
Please take a look at the Hutt City Council’s link (HCC): http://www.huttcity.govt.nz/recycling
HCC are also working on educational material to help Lower Hutt businesses and residents think about how they can reduce their waste – if you have any suggestions, please contact Sandy Beath-Croft (Hutt City Council Advisor on Waste Minimisation and Sustainability): firstname.lastname@example.org.
As noted in April’s newsletter, single-use plastic shopping bags will be phased out in New Zealand when regulations to come into effect from 1 July 2019. We also gave a few different examples of eco-friendly and/or reusable fabric bags. Since then the JSP has been looking at paper bags and cardboard food containers – we have been looking into how, as collective businesses, we can have better buying power that will help and support all businesses along our street. So, watch this space!
