Experience Christmas In Petone
November 22 @ 7:00 pm - December 23 @ 2:00 pmFree
Our Old Jail is transformed from a mini-museum into an entertaining interactive Christmas Grotto where children’s dreams are explored beyond their imaginations!
Travel to Petone for the day to check out this year’s theme and keep Santa’s helpers on their toes as people of all ages explore the Grotto. Once the Grotto has been explored, the children are able to meet Santa – you’re welcome to take your own photos of this special moment.
A designated gift room within the Santa’s Grotto is set up to collect gifts for under-privileged children and their mum’s who are residing in Women’s Refuge. We hear children asking why do we leave gifts here? While they are given an explanation our heart breaks with joy at the generosity of the community for this cause every year.
The Grotto also has a designated room for those with sensory disorders.
The Jackson Street Programme appreciates that Christmas is an expensive time of year, especially for a struggling family. With all the donations we collect, sponsorships and goodwill, we are able to give back so that entry to the Grotto is FREE.
Petone Twilight Christmas Parade
In Petone we kick off the spirit of Christmas in the Wellington region with an entertaining Twilight Christmas Parade – this year it’s on Friday, 22 November 2019, starting at 7pm. The route is along Jackson Street from Buick Street to Petone Avenue. You’ll see over 50 wonderful floats and over 600 participants made up of local organisations, mascots and character floats. Come and see why the Petone Twilight Christmas Parade draws close to 30,000 people every year!
After the parade, head back to the Historic Police Station where you will be entertained by the fabulous Faultline Chorus singing beautiful Christmas carols and turning on the Christmas lights. Then at approximately 8.30pm, The Jackson Street Programme opens Santa’s Grotto.
During the weekends prior to Christmas the family is in for a treat with our Treasure Hunts. These always start at the Historic Police Station. Each day is a different treasure hunt with a new map, so this means families can participate in as many hunts as they like. So, if you need that free day or afternoon to do those special chores, why not send the kids off with their grandparents, aunties/uncles, family friends or dad to spend the day along Jackson Street, Petone (free Treasure Hunt)
Kids love writing letters to Santa! These can be posted in Santa’s red mail box which sits outside the front door of the Historic Police Station, 274b Jackson Street, Petone. No stamp required but make sure you include a return address as Santa personally writes back to every child. Template download here
