Antonio Cacace has a firm idea of what makes a proper pizza.

“The real pizza is the margherita – tomato, mozzarella, basil. It’s simple.”

And Cacace, the owner of Lower Hutt’s La Bella Italia Restaurant in Petone should know as his restaurant was the only one in New Zealand to be named as one of the 70 Best Restaurants with a Pizzeria in the World.

The award was given by Ristorazione Italiana magazine, headed by three-Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck, and Enrico Famà from the magazine.
